    Don't ruin your perfume ! (2)

“A great number of poisonous flies came into the house of Pharaoh and his servants, and all Egypt was devastated with flies.” Exodus 8.20

When the fourth plague announced by Moses fell on Egypt, the whole country was invaded by millions of “venomous flies”. These insects were not only annoying, but also capable of biting and transmitting diseases. Two common insects can be identified with Exodus poison flies : horseflies and mosquitoes. Both sting and suck blood from their victims. Both are carriers of sometimes fatal diseases. Mosquitoes are said to kill nearly a million people a year around the world, far more than lions, bears and snakes combined. While the horsefly is easy to spot and hunt, the mosquito is much more sneaky : by piercing the skin of its victim, it injects an anesthetic so that its bite is not felt right away. Likewise, sin tries to creep into our minds in an insidious way. Its appearance is often deceptive and leaves only an imperceptible trace. “It is not what happens on the surface that is the most dangerous”, asserts Jentezen Franklin, “but what happens in the blood, out of sight. Sin targets the blood, the blood of Jesus in you, the blood that protects you and purifies you, that makes your life a sweet smelling perfume to the Lord.” He also points out that mosquitoes like standing water, not flowing streams. Like Satan's minions ! It is the flow of the Spirit that drives them away. These prefer to attack Christians who are stagnating in their spiritual walk, who have ceased to develop. His word for today : Immerse yourself in the flow of the Spirit of Jesus, and sin will no longer have a hold on you !
