Pray the promises of God ! (2)

“He had the full conviction that what God promises, he can also accomplish.” Romans 4.21

We are inclined to use the phrase : “I promise you” lightly when addressing our children, our friends or people we meet here or there. Our promises are sometimes very hollow. Nothing is further from divine commitment to us. Paul was convinced that the promises of God were sure and would come to pass sooner or later. Some say that some of them no longer concern us, that they were made to men who have long since passed away, such as Abraham, Moses or Joshua. Certainly the historical context quickly teaches us which promises were specific to a particular situation. When God promises to free the Israelites from their slavery in Egypt, it is obvious that we are not directly concerned. Yet we have all been slaves to sin, and the words of Jesus : “If therefore the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed. I know that you are the descendants of Abraham...” (John 8. 36-37). So how do you pray the promises of God ? First you must know them and memorize them ! Then present to God the one that concerns you given the circumstances you are going through. For example, pray : “Lord, Your word declares... and I trust Your word. I know you will fulfill your promise in my life. Teach me to wait patiently for your promise to come true...” If you feel alone and do not feel the presence of Jesus, pray : “Thank you Lord for what Your word affirms : “I am with you all the days until the end of time”. When I am depressed and do not feel Your presence, help me to remember Your promise to never forsake me.” More than a hundred promises apply directly to us today ! Why not start looking for them ?
