But he who was made for a little while below the angels, Jesus, we see him crowned with glory and honor, because of the death he suffered, that by the grace of God, he suffered death for all. Hebrews 2.9

What is man ? (2)

The Bible asks this question and answers it : "When I behold the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the stars which you created: What is man, that you remember him ? And the son of man, that you take heed to him ?" (Psalm 8. 4, 5). God, Creator of this immense universe, would he take care of me, such a fragile and insignificant creature ? The following text is even stranger : "You made him a little lower than God, and you crowned him with glory and magnificence. You gave him dominion over the works of your hands, you put everything under his feet" (v. 6, 7).

A man who dominates the whole universe... but who is he ?

The gospel answers : Jesus Christ, the Son of God, by whom everything was created in heaven and on earth. As a man, Son of man, he was lower than the angels, so that he could die and bear the punishment that our sins deserved. He conquered death on the cross. He was resurrected and was taken up to heaven, where he is now, as both man and God. "Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, since he went into heaven, and the angels, authorities and powers were submitted to him" (1 Peter 3:22). We do not yet see Jesus exercising his authority on earth. Today it is Satan who is the "prince of this world" (John 12.31) because of the sin that enslaves men. But Jesus has overcome it and will soon come to take over the government of the world, and all will be emotionally subject to him.

The believer who has put his trust in Jesus knows that he is united with him and will one day share in his glory.
