For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3. 16

God is love. The love of God has been manifested towards us in that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we may live through him. 1 John 4. 8, 9

The life of Jesus shows us God's love for rebellious humanity, suffering the consequences of sin.

Indeed, Jesus goes from place to place doing good, but he also speaks the truth, and the religious leaders no longer want him. So they capture him, bring him to Pilate, accuse him unjustly. Jesus lets himself go. The crowds cry out for his death, and Pilate delivers him to their hatred...

We thus get rid of the Son of God by crucifying him between two malefactors.

During the first three hours of the crucifixion, Jesus is mocked. We even challenge God his Father to deliver him, "if he loves him" (Matthew 27:43). God publicly proclaimed that he was his beloved Son (Luke 3:22), but now he lets it be said...

For the next three hours, darkness covers the land. Jesus bears our sins, he expiates them, he "became sin for us", he "the Holy and the Righteous" (2 Corinthians 5.21 ; Acts 3.14). And God abandons him, he does not answer his cry (Matthew 27. 46).

Jesus dies, saying : "It is finished" (John 19:30). He is put in a tomb, but God raises him three days later.

From now on, God can forgive and save any sinner who believes in Jesus, but at what cost !

If you really want to know who God is, look at the cross. It proclaims God's holiness in the face of your sin, his love for you, a sinner, and the price at which he has esteemed you - "God is light... God is love" (1 John 1.5 ; 4.8).
